CAR LAUNCHES NEW MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR CAMPAIGN TO MAKE AUTO INSURANCE AFFORDABILITY A PRIORITY IN ALBANY
New TV Ad Calls on Gov. Hochul and State Lawmakers to Address New York’s Soaring Car Insurance Costs in Upcoming Legislative Session
NEW YORK – Citizens for Affordable Rates (CAR) today announced a new multi-million dollar statewide advertising and advocacy campaign to put car insurance affordability at the center of New York’s cost-of-living debate. The program is designed to urge Governor Hochul and state lawmakers to comprehensively address the affordability crisis in the upcoming legislative session by taking meaningful action to lower auto insurance rates.
The new television ad, titled “Twice as Much,” highlights a startling reality: New York drivers pay nearly twice the national average for car insurance. This financial burden, fueled by issues like rampant fraud, staged car crashes, legal abuse, and outdated regulations, is one that working families simply cannot afford.
“If Albany wants to do something about the cost of living, our state leaders can start by lowering the cost of driving,” said James Freedland, a CAR spokesperson. "Working families in every corner of New York are being crushed by the high cost of car insurance, and policymakers can’t ignore it any longer. This is an affordability crisis that requires urgent action now.”
CAR’s new ad campaign represents a major expansion of its advocacy to hold state leaders accountable and demand reforms to lower insurance costs for New Yorkers. The spots will run across a variety of platforms to maximize its reach and impact:
Statewide Broadcast/Cable TV: Including Albany, NYC, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse media markets.
Connected TV (CTV/OTT): Streaming on services like Hulu, Roku, Peacock, and Apple TV.
Print, digital & political Media: Outreach through leading political and policy news outlets.
Ad Script:
Imagine if every grocery item was twice as much in New York as in other states.
Or every medical bill or all the clothes you buy.
Well, car insurance costs twice as much in New York as in most other states.
Insane, right?
And with working families already struggling just to keep their heads above water,
Paying double for car insurance is a burden we just can’t afford.
If Albany wants to do something about the cost of living, it can start by lowering the cost of driving.
CAR is urging lawmakers to address the fraud, abuse, and loopholes that inflate premiums and drive up costs for working families. The coalition says these reforms must be part of any serious effort to tackle New York’s broader affordability crisis. The multimillion-dollar action builds on CAR’s ongoing advocacy and public education campaigns, which have reached millions of New Yorkers and made insurance reform a growing political priority.
