TRUCKING INDUSTRY CONVERGES ON ALBANY TO DEMAND RELIEF FROM AUTO INSURANCE AFFORDABILITY CRISIS

ALBANY – Ahead of Tuesday’s Lobby Day in Albany, the Trucking Association of New York (TANY) is calling on state lawmakers to address a prolonged insurance affordability crisis impacting businesses and consumers across New York.

“New York’s automotive insurance market has entered a prolonged affordability crisis, with soaring premiums, shrinking coverage options, and insurers exiting the state,” said Zach Miller, TANY’s Vice President of Government Affairs.

As TANY members prepare to meet with legislators tomorrow, the group is highlighting the rapid escalation in costs facing trucking companies.

“Commercial auto liability costs have effectively doubled over the past five years. Policies that previously cost $5,000–$6,000 per power unit now commonly range from $10,000–$12,000 per unit, even for strong-performing fleets. The situation is particularly acute in the New York City region, with motor carriers reporting that they’ve recently been quoted as much as $50,000 per truck,” Miller added.

TANY also noted the growing challenges in securing adequate coverage. Market capacity has tightened significantly, with insurers limiting excess coverage and forcing operators to assemble layered policies across multiple carriers.

The association is urging lawmakers to include insurance reforms advanced by Governor Kathy Hochul in the final state budget. Experts widely agree rising costs are fueled by rampant insurance fraud, including staged car accidents and exploitation of the legal system. A recent poll found 86% of New Yorkers support the Governor’s plan to lower car insurance costs.

“Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2026 auto insurance reform proposal, introduced as part of her affordability agenda, directly addresses the key drivers of escalating premiums: fraud, staged accidents, litigation abuse, legal loopholes, and enforcement gaps. These reforms aim to stabilize the insurance marketplace, restore predictability, and deliver cost relief to businesses and consumers across New York.”

TANY made clear that passage of the proposal is a top priority during this year’s advocacy efforts, noting that these reforms are essential to combating fraud, reducing litigation abuse, stabilizing the insurance marketplace, and delivering meaningful cost relief to trucking companies, businesses, and consumers across New York.
