LEGISLATURE PASSES BUDGET BILLS TO DELIVER AUTO INSURANCE RELIEF FOR NEW YORKERS

ALBANY – The state Legislature passed bills in the FY 2026-27 State Budget to tackle skyrocketing auto insurance premiums and provide relief to millions of New York drivers. By modernizing the state’s insurance laws and launching an aggressive crackdown on rampant fraud and abuse, Governor Hochul’s budget addresses the root causes of an affordability crisis that has left New Yorkers paying nearly double the national average.

The following statement can be attributed to James Freedland, spokesperson for Citizens for Affordable Rates (CAR):

“This is a turning point for New York drivers. Families across this state have been crushed by skyhigh auto insurance costs for years – paying nearly twice the national average while fraud and dysfunction in the system went unchecked. That’s changing now. The Legislature and Governor Hochul have done what too many thought was impossible: they took on a broken system and delivered real reform. With stronger enforcement, modernized rules, and excessive insurance profits returned to policyholders, the Legislature and Governor Hochul are putting money back in the pockets of hardworking New Yorkers. This is what leadership on affordability looks like.”
